Coffee is a beverage that is savored by people the world over. There are many who start their day with a cup of coffee. Basically, it is the presence of caffeine in coffee and tea that is responsible for the stimulant effect. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, making one feel alert. It is one of the most commonly used psychoactive drugs in the world. So, is coffee a diuretic? The term 'diuretic' is used while referring to drugs or compounds that increase the rate of urination. These compounds increase the excretion of water from the body along with other waste products. According to the Food and Drug Administration of the United States and the American Medical Association, moderate intake of caffeine is 'generally recognized as safe', but excessive intake must be avoided. Coffee has a mild diuretic action, which means that it can cause increased urination. It is believed that excessive intake of coffee can have an adverse effect on the fluid balance, thereby causing dehydration.
The addiction can also increase tolerance to caffeine. This is exactly what happens when one gets addicted to other psychoactive substances and alcohol. An 'increased tolerance' means that more of the substance is required to create the same effects on the body and the mind. In other words, if earlier a single cup of coffee was sufficient to stay awake and mentally alert for an hour, now it can take more than a cup to produce the same effect.
If you have often wondered what's brewing in the coffee shops and the reasons why people flock to these places, well, there's more out there than you can ever imagine. The enticing aroma of this beverage can beckon even those who are not really addicted to it. This simple beverage has now turned into a lifestyle for many. Youngster's love spending time at coffee shops and young professionals are even known to have important business meetings in these swanky outlets.
